I learned today that it takes me just over 20 minutes to walk briskly to our local Trader Joe's. My toes are tired now. I've been going to the gym, but even the treadmill isn't the same as steady walking. Clearly, I need to make this walk (or something similar) on a regular basis.

I realized today that I weeded out Good King Henry a few weeks ago. I remember thinking, "Are those weeds? They look sort of deliberate. But I don't remember planting anything there." How aggravating. Oh well, it's not like I don't have more greens than I can eat anyhow, plus I've got a beautiful stand of purple orach sprouting in the back yard. Anyhow, our winter probably wouldn't have been cold enough for King Henry. (I sprouted the seed by sticking the pot in the back of the refrigerator for a few months.)

Dusty Millers always look so cute when they're small, then they become such thugs. I hacked back several today. At least I got a bunch of mulch out of it. I discovered a privet hiding among the roses too. Hah, he's gone now! Also discovered another broken branch on the lemon tree. Stupid tree is way over producing. Anyone want some organic lemons, come and get them!! I've got a giant bowl full, and I can see another branch that's poised to break unless I relieve the load asap.

Daylight savings time returns tomorrow, in case you hadn't heard. Hooray, it'll make grilling for dinner so much easier.

Tonight's dinner was sauteed shredded beets with linguine, topped with parmesan and toasted walnuts, and served on a bed of steamed beet greens. I wasn't sure about beets and pasta, but it was marvelous, and the beets turned the pasta a gorgeous color when they were mixed. Salad was shaved fennel with blood orange. I have more of all three in the garden (beets, fennel, and blood orange), so I must get creative. There's also snow peas, chard, spinach, kale, mustard, frisee, and some lettuces that haven't bolted yet. I'm afflicted with vegetable guilt. And yet, I'm so thrilled to have an excess of blood oranges! Oh, but I still have citrus guilt, because I have bergamot oranges, limes, and kaffir limes that I'm not using. (Note to Jon S. if you're reading this -- I have a kaffir lime seed for you!)

We watched Porco Rosso tonight. Very Bogart -- I wonder if that was a conscious influence. The 'behind the microphone' interviews were great! Though we disagreed with their assessment of Cary Elwes' Texas accent. We didn't know who it was, but as soon as we heard it, we said, "That's a Brit trying to do a southern accent." We could hardly believe that Grandpa Piccolo was David Ogden Stiers!

Remember, set those clocks ahead.

Death to privet!!
Odd, but we intended to have beets for dinner tonight. Unfortunately they'd resided in the garage for a little too long. .. I'm sure I can take some of the extra veg off your hands -- lemons, among other things.

Funny coincidence -- right now I'm listening to a download of a live concert performance of "Li'l Abner," with Gen. Bullmoose played by ... David Ogden Stiers.

And people think I'm weird for only pulling out plants that I can positively identify as in the wrong places ;-)

Accents are a minefield. I really don't want to see The Other Boleyn Girl for this reason, even though, were it not for the casting, I would want to see it. And it's not that I have anything against the actors cast as such.

Some people manage. I spent a long time wondering why they'd chosen Christian Bale to voice Howl in the English dub of Howl's Moving Castle (which I've still not seen, despite possessing the DVD). But, duh. He's Welsh. It's just that I've never seen him in a film when he's not doing an American accent, and he's so good... I forget he's not American.

About the time when the Porco DVD became available, there was a theatrical showing of it (I think it was in double feature with Nausicaa). And who should we run into there, but [livejournal.com profile] davidlevine and [livejournal.com profile] kateyule.

D.O.Stiers was the guest speaker at the showing, and he told us about the experience! It was great, except for the large quantity of audience members who seemed surprised that he'd been in Beauty and the Beast! I guess I'm more of an obsessive animation fan than I realized.
