June 1 falls on a Monday this year. How auspicious is that?

Well, not at all auspicious really. June is only the sixth month, so it's not even really the half-year, though I always think of it as halfway through the year, maybe because it marked the end of the school year. It just happens that I had a few "I ought to"s of physical sorts floating around that I was planning to start this week anyhow.

1. Following [livejournal.com profile] minnehaha K's example, I'm going to play along with the One Hundreds Pushups program. Though I'm running into a snag right at the beginning: I can't figure out, even from watching their video, how far down I have to go to have it count. There's a point of no return for me, when I'm getting close to  the floor but not yet touching with anything (nose, chin, or chest), and if I go past that point, I can't lift up again with anything like "good form". So do I just go as far as I'm able and back up? Does that count? What does counting mean in this context anyhow? Surely anything I do will be an improvement, as long as I don't injure myself. (Need I even say that I'm talking knee pushups here? Classic pushups are totally beyond me.)

2. I don't have any desire to become a runner, but I do want to be able to run enough to catch a train or bus without feeling like I'm killing myself. So I'm going back to interval training on the treadmill at the gym. Today I simply alternated running 1 minute at 4.5 mph with 2 min walking at 3.5 mph, 5 times, then finished with a good uphill walk for 10 min (it really helps with hiking when I do this uphill part regularly). Not quite sure where I want to go with this, though. Stick with this for a week, then what? Increase the times? Increase the speeds? Decrease the walking interval? Some of all of the above? I suppose there must be a chart somewhere with suggestions for this too.

3. I've been taking yoga weekly for a little over a year now, but I only occasionally do it at home in between classes. I'm going to try to do a few positions on a daily basis. Something like downward-facing dog (I love that one), a balance pose of some sort, and, I dunno, something else. I'm a little vague on this one still.

4. And as always, we want to take more walks/hikes, but we've been doing pretty well with that this year. Today we went out to the Sunnyvale Baylands area and walked a trail that took us behind Lockheed Martin (with sternly worded signs that photography and even sketching was forbidden) and to the corner of the Moffett Airfield golf course (who knew?). We saw many birds (herons, egrets, ducks, swallows, or do I mean swifts?) & butterflies in the wetlands. Not at all long or strenuous, but not bad for a spur of the moment walk.
