peppers redux
Sep. 10th, 2006 10:40 pmI just packed away 5 containers of oven-roasted peppers and onions (and garlic & olive oil) plus 3 containers of fire-roasted peppers. I feel virtuous. I set a timer for 1/2 hr intervals, so I didn't burn the oven ones to a crisp like last time. See, I can learn. There are more peppers coming on as well. Peppers, mmmm.
The beans, however, are mostly finished. I took out one pair of them earlier this week. Marvel of Venice just never recovered from that heat wave and the Blue Lake poles were mostly not. That is, half of them were Blue Lake bush and the other half were an unknown pole. None of them were Blue Lake pole. Very annoying. A friend of mine told me this happened to her a few years ago as well. Somebody is doing a bad seed management job. Anyhow, I planted peas in their place, Tall Telephone and Renée's Super Sugar Snap, and the first Tall Telephone broke ground today. I took out 1 1/2 pairs of the remaining beans today (I'm saving seed from one so I need to let them mature and dry), and replaced them with Little Marvel and 2 trellises worth of my fave, Miragreen. Peas, that is.
I also took out melons Galia, Prescott Fond Blanc, and Zatta. Zatta wasn't Zatta anyhow. Prescott is beautiful and unusual, and the flavor is good, but it's not very sweet. Galia is superb, but it was done for the season. 2 cucumbers came out today too (Beit Alpha and Painted Serpent), but Amira is still plugging away quite impressively.
My sister gave me a hand cream that's supposed to neutralize onion/garlic odors, so I'm seeing if it can neutralize burnt pepper skin, a surprisingly lingering odor. So far, so good.
Tomorrow we're having a fig feast. Details later.
