Orthotics Ahoy
Sep. 8th, 2006 07:33 amI got my orthotic inserts a couple days ago. Remember when I talked about having my feet taped up? The taping felt very odd, but the orthotics feel wonderful. They're quite small and thin, like the heel half of an insole. They snug into the heel of my shoes and I can hardly tell they're there, except that balls of my feet are not aching so much.
The first day I wore them, I could feel differences in my right leg and hip. I've had intermittent lower backaches on that side and had wondered if the orthotic might alleviate some of that tendency. Tentatively, I'm thinking yes. Because the orthotics can affect other joints and muscles ("The foot bone's connected to the ankle bone..."), I'm still ramping up on the wearing, two hours more each day.
Now I wish I had done this years ago. I rather thought I would feel that way, yet I kept putting it off. Why? I don't know. I had a vague image of orthotics involving massive ugly shoes. But these little babies will fit into dress shoes, no problem. Sandals and flip-flops, okay, maybe those are a problem, but I'll look into that next spring. The doctor says there are brands that work better than others.
I do wonder how many people would benefit from a little correction to their feet. I suspect podiatrists would say most. Perhaps in some fantasy future, when we step into a booth to be scanned and all our clothes are made to measure, all of our shoes would perfectly adjusted for what our feet need. Hmm, maybe that's why bespoke shoes are supposed to be so fabulous.
