Sun! Quick, to the garden
Mar. 1st, 2006 05:48 pmWe had a sunny day today in between storm systems, so M & I spent much of it doing long delayed garden tasks. For starters, I needed to prop up the the two pea trellises that had tipped over. And then the weeds, oh my. Despite recent chilly weather, they've taken off big time. There were even several dandelions blooming! M attacked the oxalis -- we never manage to get rid of it entirely, but if you keep after it, you can weaken it. At least, that's the theory.
I declared war on shepherd's purse and petty spurge last year, and I do believe I'm seeing an effect already. They're not noxious weeds, merely annuals that self-sow readily. But they annoy me in their messy seeding stage. The traditional wisdom is 'One year of seeding means seven years of weeding.' By that count I've got 6 more years to go, so I shouldn't gloat yet.
I'm growing three kinds of turnips this year: Golden Ball, Purple Top, and Amber Globe. I picked an Amber Globe yesterday and was amazed at the flavor. It's so sweet and mild, you can just cut it into sticks as a crudité. I'm going to try grating one for a raw salad tonight.
