iPhone not charging?

I'm suspicious that my iPhone isn't charging the battery. It's not down very much, over 3/4 charged, but I plugged it in this morning while I was working at the computer, and a while later, I noticed it was still sitting at  3/4+ charged, no change. I even tried plugging it into the wall charger, but no change there either.

Hah, I just tried again and now it's zipping up to full charge, no problem. Flaky battery, flaky cable, flaky connection, flaky universe? Who knows? My car battery died today too, so maybe the sympathetic magic of fixing the car battery fixed the iPhone.

Weird. I haven't seen any reports of such problems in my general perusal of things iPhone and my experience has been that mine charges up quite quickly. I wonder if there was some over-the-air updating (of mail or contacts or what-not) going on that was preventing the charging indicator from responding. As I say, weird.

You may notice that the charge level seems to jump a bit when you plug it in. IIUC, the ways a device can measure a battery's level when discharging and charging are different, and may not agree perfectly. The fiction that a battery is a bucket into which we pour green fluid is appealing, but it's a big simplification from a messy chemical reality.

In short, if the screen says it's charging and the charge level isn't actually going down, I wouldn't worry about it: it's probably charging OK. If you want to wave a rubber chicken over it, turn it off and back on.

I'm going for the flaky universe theory. My camera's battery charges in much the same way.

I think the charging indicator on the iPhone is well dodgy; I've had several times when it's been plugged in, hasn't said it's charging, has remained red, but has nevertheless charged.
