We spent the day in San Francisco today, starting out at the Ferry Plaza farmers market where I tasted white guavas for the first time. They're intensely fragrant! I was entranced and bought several which are now perfuming our dining room. I also bought an heirloom escarole that I'd like to track down, though what I remember of the name isn't getting any hits. We had lunch from Rose Pistola's market cart, enjoying the balmy weather while eating outside.

Then we went over to Pacific Heights for a long and fairly strenuous stairway walk, partly our own doing since we added a couple extra stairways just because they intrigued us. There were astonishing houses from start to finish and at least four consulates: Russian, Indonesian, Italian, and Norwegian. Perhaps some pictures will follow.

SF's Dine About Town program ended today, but we managed to squeak one in at Fish & Farm, in the Mark Twain Hotel. The food was excellent, but I particularly enjoyed my aperitif, an Inebriated Gnome, made with "Cedar-pine vodka, mushroom liqueur, redwood-berry chai, and peat bitters". Honest, it was great! Notes of cinnamon, sandalwood, and juniper. We also hugely enjoyed a Tolosa Pinot Noir from San Luis Obispo and hope to track down a bottle.

And now, to bed, hoping I won't be too stiff to prune roses tomorrow.
