The feet

So, as we probably all suspected, the reality was somewhere in between. From the doctor's point of view, and relative to the original bunion surgery, the screw removal is hardly anything at all. "Do your normal routine, whatever feels comfortable," he blithely says, although expecting me to be sensible enough to take it easy the few days, and solicitously offering pain medication if I want it. I had Vicodin left over from the original surgeries, but that would have been way overkill; I just took ibuprofen for a day, then forgot about it. But I probably won't be going to the gym  (even though I could use the arm machines, obviously), until next week, after the stitches come out.

The dressing, while bulky, is not nearly so much as the original. And happily, my SAS sandals are adjustable enough that I can wear them, a vast improvement over the clumsy surgical sandals. My right foot (the one the screw was backing out of) feels almost back to normal, making it easy for me to drive. The left foot is still a bit stiff, but that one had a longer incision (three stitches instead of just one), so that makes sense.

The big hassle is that I can't get the dressings wet, so I'm doing sponge baths and washing my hair in the sink. How long has it been since I washed my hair like that? What a pain trying to rinse all the soap out. I must have done it when I traveled in France by myself, because I never booked rooms with en suite facilities (too expensive for my budget). But they always had sinks and bidets, the latter so very excellent for washing the nether regions. I think bidets would be a great boon to the elderly, so much easier and safer to use than a bathtub. Too bad their association in the U.S. is strictly for after sex (at least, that's the impression I get).
