St. Alphonzo's Pancake Breakfast
May. 13th, 2007 10:21 pmWe had our St. Alphonzo's Pancake Breakfast today. Many pancakes and much bacon consumed. I was pleased it was actually warm enough to sit out under the pergola, unlike yesterday.
I cooked the bacon in the oven on a rack over a baking sheet. It was just as easy as promised although it took a bit longer than expected (15-18 minutes instead of 10-12). Niman Ranch won the taste off, though Dimers was still very good. Trader Joe's large domestic blueberries edged out the small wild blueberries which had been expected to win, at least in some of our opinions. But the banana walnut pancakes were my fave. The maple syrups were all good (one A, two Bs). I didn't hear any comments on the wild plum syrup or lilikoi (passionfruit) syrup.
The white peach puree for bellinis had turned brown in the freezer but still tasted good. I realized afterwards that I should have mixed up a whole pitcher of them, because the peach puree caused the champagne to foam excessively so it was very tedious mixing up a single glass for oneself.
My usual party-giving style is to choose dishes that require relatively little last minute prep, but pancakes especially and bacon to some extent are all about last minute prep. I felt rather tied to the kitchen even though
voidampersand did most of the pancake cookery. (I was turning the bacon tray every 5 minutes to ensure even back to front cooking.)
In any case, if we do it again, we won't schedule it on Mother's Day which cut down our potential attendees quite a bit. Sorry about that.
Much thanks to co-hosts
spikeiowa and
voidampersand!
