Some reflections
Apr. 18th, 2007 11:01 pmI have a friend in the English department at Blacksburg. She mainly teaches literature, not creative writing, but she may still have had contact with Cho Seung-Hui. She's okay, at least as okay as anyone down there can be right now.
How can anyone tell which sad, withdrawn, scary loner is the one who's going to crack? Would better mental health care have helped? Though you can't force someone to accept help or take their meds, until you get to the point of institutionalizing.
I remember a couple of people in Mpls fandom who made a lot of us nervous for a while, but they never actually did anything. If they had, we would have said, "Oh yes, we should have recognized the signs." But they didn't, and the signs didn't mean anything in those particular cases. How many other college kids have there been who have written hateful, violent essays, but didn't go on to hurt anyone?
