Vanity to the rescue
Mar. 4th, 2007 10:47 pmI recently ran across this tidbit. There's a prescription medicine called Vaniqa which is used for reducing unwanted facial hair (UFH -- they use an acronym for it!) in women of a certain age. Its active ingredient is eflornithine, which also happens to cure African sleeping sickness. Whoa, talk about a side effect! Although actually, that use was known earlier, but drug companies stopped making it because it wasn't a paying market. Doctors without Borders have been lobbying to continue the manufacture, but with much success. Vanity to the rescue! Now it's worth manufacturing eflornithine again.
