Composing in my head
Mar. 1st, 2007 09:36 pmOnce again, I find myself composing LJ entries in my head, while I'm out and about, in the garden, at the gym, or in the car. But when I'm sitting in front of the computer, phtt, no inspiration. So I'll force myself write a little update here and hope it isn't as boring as I feel at the moment.
I've taught two classes so far in a six-class sustainable vegetable gardening series, one on water & irrigation and one on seeds & seedlings. The next class is on year-round veggie gardening with details on specific vegetables. Should be fun. The class seems attentive and interested. We sent them home last time with lettuce seedlings (that they had to pot up themselves) and newly planted seeds (ditto).
In between the two classes was President's Day, no class, so there was a two week gap. We seized the opportunity and went to Hawaii for a week. Many orchids! Many fish! Much lava! Too many places names beginning with the letter K! We stayed in Hilo for 2 nights (Dolphin Bay Hotel, charming place with a banana forest in back), Volcano (Honeymoon Cottage, actually as nice as the pictures showed it), Keauhou Outrigger (right next to Kahalu'u beach, best snorkeling in the islands), and back to Dolphin Bay for the last night. It was raining in San Jose when we left, raining when we came back, and apparently sunny and warm the 8 days we were gone. Oh well, we had a great time (despite getting rained on in Volcano).
We ate our first beets from the garden tonight. I do adore beet greens. Also roasted beets. The lettuces are trying to bolt (must have been that sunny weather while we were gone), but we've eaten a fair number of them. Tomorrow I'm going to make that classic French pea and braised butter lettuce dish, I think.
For an exciting finale to the day, I think I'll spend the next hour organizing my seeds and updating my seed database. No, really, it's more exciting than it sounds. Well, maybe not that exciting, but useful anyhow. I want to order some new seeds. Just look at the interesting offerings from Baker Creek Seeds. I gotta get me some!
