A Scanner Darkly, Bride & Prejudice
Jul. 17th, 2006 10:18 pm98 degrees in San Jose today, so we cleverly went off to a matinee of A Scanner Darkly. It was excellent! I liked all of the voice choices, and the visuals fit my mental images too. I think the movie told the story clearly enough so it would be understandable without reading (or re-reading) Dick's book. But I did come out of the theater feeling a bit disconnected from reality. Every conversation I overheard, or even when I spoke myself, seemed to echo the stoner dialogues. We went to Trader Joe's to pick up a few things afterwards, and I definitely wasn't my usual efficient self. But the effect wore off. I had a similar experience coming out of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Last night we watched Bride and Prejudice, a totally different unreality: Jane Austen meets Bollywood. What fun! We both thought the Darcy character was far too wimpy, and the Jane (Jaya) character was totally eclipsed by Lalita/Lizzie. But it was still much fun. I recommend seeing the recent Pride and Prejudice movie just before so the characters and plot are all fresh in your mind.
Grilled squash, eggplant, and onions for dinner tonight, along with a cucumber yogurt salad. A veggie feast to balance the afternoon popcorn consumption.
