Berkeley Early Music Festival
Jun. 8th, 2006 07:18 amThe Berkeley Early Music Festival is going on right now. And I'm thrilled that St. Ann's Consort will be doing a repeat of the concert I saw last fall that I raved about. So thrilled that I'm going to go hear it again. Got to hear some more of that melisma. Highly recommended if you're at all interested in this sort of thing.
My youngest brother is in town this week for Coast Guard stuff in Alameda, so I sent him a copy of the concert schedule. He went to hear La Foolia Monday which he said was brilliant and hilarious -- must keep an eye out for them. We went to hear AVE Tuesday night, which was utterly fantastic. Since the concert date was 6/6/06, they did a series of pieces set to verses from Revelations. But I think I'd go hear this group singing anything.Their musicianship was superb. My brother sings countertenor, so he was particularly pleased that the group had two. Alta Sonora and WAVE, who we went to see afterwards, paled mightily in comparison, even though they're quite good. (Their music selection was, frankly, boring.)
I'v meant in past years to pay more attention to the Berkeley Early Music Festival, but have always missed it. So how fortuitous that it has come together this time.
