May showers!
May. 22nd, 2006 08:04 amFor most folks, rain in May is not newsworthy, but it's an extraordinary event here. Friday we had light showers, and yesterday we had real, for true, downpouring rain! Supposedly we could have more showers today, but I'm seeing lots of blue sky and sun at the moment. Which is good, because I put a bunch of beans in the ground and I'd like them to grow, not rot in cold, wet ground.
This year's pole beans are: Blue Lake, Marvel of Venice (two constant favorites), Kwintus (a favorite from last year), and three new ones: King's Banquet (from a web acquaintance, highly recommended by his kids), Sunset runner (beautiful salmon-pink flowers), and Sun Bright runner (yellow leaves and red blossoms -- I'm not sure about this one. I accidentally bought it thinking it was Sunset).
This year's bush beans are: Brittle Wax (a beloved favorite), Empress (new, from Seed Savers, green), and Soleil (yellow filet beans, very nice).
I've also planted 6 edamame seeds directly in the ground and 6 more in a six-pack as back up. I've recently learned, to my sorrow, that soybeans don't retain viability more than a couple of years. It's so strange because most beans are very long lasting indeed, e.g. caches over 1500 years old still able to germinate. I grew a variety from Nichols called "Buker's Favorite" several years ago, liked it, kept seeds, didn't have good luck the next year, and haven't been able to germinate them since. And Nichols no long carries it. So sad.
Also planted last week: eggplants (Neon, Nadia, Rosita), chiles (Aji Amarillo, Rocoto Red Manzano, Suavé Orange), cukes (Amira, Beit Alpha, Painted Serpent), melons (Galia, Zatta, Ambrosia, Prescott Fond Blanc, Rocky Ford, Swan Lake), and sweet peppers (Ariane, Buran, Diamond, Early Sensation, Garden Sunshine, Golden Calwonder, Gusto, Hungarian Paradicson Alaku, King of the North, Orange Sun, Ori, Sweet Bullnose). Plus various flowers and basil, of course.
Today I plant more, more I tell you! (But I'm going to have to stop soon.)
