We had a wonderful New Year's Eve party. I find it incredibly satisfying to see a room full of happy party guests. M & I can only take so much credit for providing the trappings and venue for the party. We feel lucky to have such a great group of friends who come and make the party happen. Many thanks to
spikeiowa for both helping clean house in the morning (I'm just back after being gone for a month, you know) and washing a few dozen champagne flutes et al. at the other end of the party. It was so great to have so much clean up down before going to bed.
Normally, we manage to get up, get the remaining clean up done, pack up a tray or two of tasty leftovers, and head up to the New Year's Day party at
wild_irises'. But not this year. Were we too tired? Exhausted from lack of sleep and cleaning up? Suffering from hangovers? Depressed from recent events? Had as much socializing as we could take? Afraid of driving in the storms lashing the area?
Nope, none of the above. Though the last is tangentially related. While sitting at my computer listening to the wind roaring, I heard a different sound. Not the usual bang of a palm frond hitting the house, but a sort of clattering sound with just a hint of tinkle. I thought for a moment, then said, "Ah, I knew that rotting windowframe in the sunroom would give out one day."
So we squandered what energy we had, not to mention a few hours, cleaning up broken glass and figuring how to board up a 4' x 5' window when the entire remaining window frame has the texture of a damp sponge. It was challenging. The 25-35 mph winds (with gusts to 50, the weather site says), made it more exciting. At least the rain held off down here (I hear it was downpouring in Oakland).
So happy new year to anyone we didn't see at the party today, not to mention to distant friends who we wouldn't have seen even if we had made it to Deb's. Hope 2006 is good for all of you.
