We were sad about skipping Wiscon, but we had a reasonable time at Baycon. There were a few friends it was particularly nice to spend time with. Plus I spent my mornings gardening.

It isn't that I like gardening particularly. I mean, some people go rhapsodic about feeling connected with the earth or the smell of fresh soil or how gardening helps them relax and destress. Frankly, I find gardening very stressFUL. There's always way more to do than I can possibly get done. Somedays I can't even get myself out into the garden because there's so much to do that I don't know where to start, so I don't.

But I do like the results. I love harvesting my own delicious beans (I'm growing 7 varieties of pole beans, 2 of bush beans, 3 of bush limas, and 2 of edamame [soy]). And peppers (oh, I don't know, at least a dozen varieties). And basil (just 4 -- plain, Genovese, Mrs. Burns' lemon, and cinnamon). And summer squash (8 varieties). Etc.

I cook, therefore I garden.

And, err, I do like pulling out old spent plants. Everything looks so neat and clean afterwards. After harvesting, this is probably my happiest task. What kind of a gardener am I that my second favorite task is killing plants?

Today was the Calendula Day of Doom. I am sore, but happy.

P.S. The pomegranate is planted. It had been in a pot for at least 6 years. It has several flowers on it, but I probably shouldn't let it fruit this first year. Oh well, the flowers are pretty enough in and of themselves.
