We're back from a week-long trip to D.C. Most of it was spent visiting family, but some sightseeing happened, including me finally visiting the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, something I've never managed before in previous trips. It's too early for most of the cherries, but we did find a couple of early bloomers.

We also managed to visit the Baltimore Aquarium this trip, something we tried before but didn't manage. That trip included a silly side-trip to Charm City Cakes (I thought it was pointless to visit a place where all you can do is take a picture of the sign, but others in the car were enthusiastic) and to the quite fabulous Museum of Visionary Art. Dinner was an overindulgence in gelato concoctions at Vaccaro's, another Baltimore institution (both my brother and M's sister have an insatiable sweet tooth and are fans of the place).

I was up early this morning (still on east coast time, of course) and had lots of plans to get stuff done. And I have, within reason, except that for no good reason, I'm having severe back pains.

I've noticed a correlation in my body between bowel movements and back pain. I also have a largish fibroid on the back of the uterus which generally causes me no problems, but I asked the tech the last time I had an ultrasound if he thought that it could be causing me back pain, especially when combined with a mass moving through the bowels, and he thought it was pretty plausible. So occasionally I feel an achiness that is relieved when the mass, um, exits. Except today, the reverse happened: I felt fine until after the b.m. Now I'm getting these occasional stabbing pains (not a continous ache) that make me feel I must move very, very cautiously or else my back will 'seize up'.

I'm mildly concerned that this time the fibroid has managed to position itself so that it's continuously irritating some nerve. I managed to do some errands in the car, but it was getting increasingly difficult to get in and out, much less carry anything. I've used cold, heat, ibuprofen, and rest in a recliner so far. Here's hoping my body gets back to normal soon.

I must make borsht soon -- a couple of the beets have started to bolt!
